why do crickets chirp?

its the same sound over and over again.
perhaps by one, perhaps by many.
never changing pitch,
never changing rhythm,
never changing time.
just the constant chirp.
almost mechanical.
i'd call it communication...
if i could hear a change

does our constant chatter sound as crickets to his ears?
